Boozy Caramel Popcorn Recipe

Caramel Popcorn Recipe
by Phillip of Southern Fatty

Phillip over at SouthernFatty.com wears the crown for creating this classic caramel popcorn with a whiskey cream twist. His recipe for sweet whiskey cream infused homemade caramel covering buttery popcorn, though it sounds fancy, is so simple it can be whipped up during the previews on movie night! After careful experimentation, he does recommend making back-to-back batches because the initial batch will disappear by the fistful!

1 recipe of popcorn, buttered or plain (microwave bag works fine!), popped and cooled
1 ¼ cups sugar
⅓ cup corn syrup

¼ cup brown sugar

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ cup Jackson Morgan Southern in Bread Pudding

3 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon baking soda

  1. Prepare a baking sheet by lightly spraying with non-stick spray or by using a silicone baking mat.

  2. Spread popcorn on a baking sheet.

  3. In a large saucepan, combine sugars, syrup, salt.

  4. Cook over medium heat until it reaches 300 F, using a candy thermometer.

  5. Once it reaches temperature, remove from heat and add in butter and cream. Stir well.

  6. Add baking soda and stir.

  7. Pour directly on popcorn, mix carefully with greased spatulas.

  8. Let cool completely and enjoy!

  9. Find more on SouthernFATTY.com.

If all this salty-sweet talk has your mouth watering, fear not...
Stick around! An assortment of devilishly delicious drinks awaits just around the corner.

Halloween Movie Popcorn Bar

Whether you are hosting an outdoor movie marathon with friends or cuddling with the fam on the couch to catch your favorite fall flick, we all know a snack station is an absolute must. Can’t decide what to serve? I think critics would agree, you can’t go wrong with a movie theater tradition like popcorn!

At our popcorn bar, we offer movie-goers two flavors: buttered and caramel (boozy). This self-service style station features the popcorn nestled into handy harvest baskets with flavor choices clearly labeled for a simple scoop-and-go set up. Keep the tradition going with theater-inspired single-serve striped popcorn bags or buckets. Snackers can also feel free to scoop up some toppings from our tray, like mini peanut butter cups, candy pumpkins, candy corn, or chocolate candies and sprinkle them onto their popcorn as a sweet garnish. Depending on your friends and family, they might consider it a feature film fail to forget the movie candies, so know your audience and plan accordingly.

Now Showing! Let viewers know what will be projected on the big screen by announcing the movie of the evening on a letterboard. If the film choice is a surprise, or if guests cast votes on which flick to watch, hosts could perform a reveal of the picture title on the letterboard for added Hollywood-style dramatic emphasis. Our letterboard is traditional in black and white pairs perfectly with our color scheme for this particular party. We opted for striped popcorn containers, serving baskets, signs, labels, serve wear, and gingham table throw also in black and white. Glints and gleams of color pop in with tinted glass and plump pumpkins throughout, not to mention our colorful assortment of candies on the snack bar.

Just like at the theater, you hope interruptions and distractions during the show are minimal. Think ahead and prevent friends from calling out to you from the snack bar as they try to remember where the boozy caramel popcorn is by creating signs or tags for items and flavors. Worried no one could decipher your chicken scratch writing? Whenever a need for signage pops up, we opt to feature hand-lettered signs by Ruthie and Oliver Letterpress. The wording is always clearly legible and the font is spirited, and Erica (owner) is a wiz at brush lettering.

On the same token, when the setting is dark, it is beneficial to offer a little lighting at your popcorn bar to prevent any crashes or snack-cidents. We use and abuse our battery-operated candles at events like this, they are so versatile and offer just enough light to be helpful and functional, yet not demanding or distracting. To add a decorative element, place the candles inside clear or tinted glass jars or festive shapes like pumpkins or witch’s cauldrons.

Sometimes it’s the tiny touches that make moments memorable. For our family, a few of us really feel like the striped popcorn containers truly set the tone. Others adored the subtle witch hat printed napkins we picked up from Lettermade. (Tip: Without a date or specific event title and sticking with a simple emblem, we can utilize these bewitching bev naps at other spooky shindigs.)

Anxious to sink your fangs into our boozy version of caramel popcorn? It’s a cliffhanger! Stay tuned… the recipe is coming up next!

Tips for Setting Up An Outdoor Movie Theater

Did you catch our Halloween outdoor movie theater post earlier this week? We wanted to dive into more of the technical details for recreating this at home. We learned a few tips and tricks along the way.

Screen Set Up

The set up for the outdoor theater is quite simple. All you need is an outdoor movie screen, projector, computer, HDMI cord, and an extension cord depending on your location. Set up the screen (the one we used is linked below) and tethered it to something substantial just in case there is wind. You can use sandbags or large containers filled with water to keep the screen in place. We discretely hid this behind the brick pillars for our movie night. You can also use a sheet or the side of a house or barn instead of a screen.

Place a projector a few feet away, and you may have to adjust the distance if the movie does not fill the screen. Make sure your projector is placed high enough, we stacked hay bales and set it on top. Using an HDMI cord connect your computer to the projector and mirror your computer screen with the movie playing. You can add wireless speakers if you want louder sound. We used a bluetooth speaker to stream the sound from the movie, but the computer would be loud enough for a small group of guests.

Hopefully with these tips, you will not have any issues setting up your own outdoor movie theater. Kick back, have a bowl of popcorn, and enjoy a cocktail with the movie.

Halloween Outdoor Movie Theater

In place of a traditional Halloween gathering, I opted for a casual outdoor movie party at our family's farm showing a black and white movie. Hay bales topped with Jackson Morgan Southern Cream throw blankets, leftover fabric, and outdoor pillows were the ideal seating arrangements for movie viewing.

Food Stations

For this party, I had a bar cart as a drink station with premade Jackson Morgan cocktails on ice ready to go for when guests arrived. The whipped orange cream, salted caramel, and brown sugar and cinnamon are my top fall flavors. I also created a popcorn bar with boozy salted caramel popcorn and buttered popcorn. Candy corn, candy pumpkins, mini peanut butter cups, chocolate candies, and more were served as popcorn toppings for movie enjoying.

Movie Suggestions

We are not big scary movie fans in our family, so I opted for a black and white version of Frankenstein. A few other contenders were Hocus Pocus, The Addams Family, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, Charlie Brown and The Great Pumpkin, Practical Magic, and Ghostbusters.

I kept to a traditional black and white color scheme. To make the movie screen more spooky, we added giant spiders to the screen and a fog machine. I placed a few skeletons around to “enjoy” the movie as well. As with any entertaining during the fall season, I added a few pumpkins around the space. In large lanterns, I placed battery candles to help with lighting along with string lighting.

Stay tuned for more posts about this Halloween movie party.

Outfits for Tailgating

Easy Tailgating Entertaining Pieces

If your family is like ours, you may not be keen on busting out the fine China for a football party. However, you know you need sturdy serve wear for such an occasion. For our tasty tailgating menu items, we trust a variety of melamine pieces from the Nora Fleming collection. This option is perfect for outdoor dining and casual entertaining while holding true to the quality and design the brand upholds. As a game day bonus, the mini beer and red party cup attachments are a nice finishing touch.

When space is limited, we rely on our special teams serving pieces to take the field and handle the situation. The captain of that squad is our tried-and-true tiered tray. Sturdy and strong, stock each shelf with mouth-watering appetizers, and then stack up the shelves to save space on the serving table. When the final buzzer blows, the tiered tray breaks down for easy traveling, and cleaning it is a cinch.

Our tailgate parties would not be the same without our versatile orange cooler. The fact that it rolls not only makes it easy to move around during the party if needed, but partygoers also will not have to risk being put on the injured list attempting to lift and haul the cooler around. It maintains temperature well and keeps drinks cold, while also offering a handy area to keep cups, straws, and other party accessories. Like any well-rounded player, our orange cooler is adaptable and brings a broad skillset to the playing field!

Flying Ham Campers

Our rad retro-themed tailgate party with vintage vibes and decor is totally the bee’s knees! Friends and family always crush on the camper and claim that it is what truly sets the scene for our shindig. If you are hot to trot to feature one at your next event, we want to emphasize all the credit for the camper to the Flying Ham of Nashville, Tennessee. This camper is the perfect place to sip on Jackson Morgan Southern Cream cocktails.

The rental process could not be simpler. The Flying Ham offers two sizes of campers at two set prices. Both options will include all the bells and whistles, such as a TV with Blu-ray player, coffeemaker and mugs, even a record player to resound the retro feel, all with no hidden additional fees. Morgan and Ashley, the husband and wife team behind the company, have included a long list of amenities and helpful photos of even the inside of the campers on their website. The best part? Whether you are tailgating, glamping, or just hosting a good ole fashioned party - simply name your spot, and they will deliver the camper to your desired location.

Tubular Tidbit - The Flying Ham offers handmade gift certificates, custom created to fit your specific event (birthday, glamping, just because, etc). The holidays are just around the corner, check out theflyingham.com or shoot them an email at flyinghamrentals@gmail.com for more info.

Boozy Orange Cupcakes

Even if you are not cheering for the Volunteers, these boozy orange cupcakes will more than satisfy the sweet tooth at your tailgate! Boasting a winning record, these treats do not disappoint. The recipe comes together so simply, no scouting or reviewing film required! In fact, more than likely you already have all the necessary ingredients on hand. Check out this power play of a recipe.

Boozy Orange Cupcakes Recipe

1 Store-bought box of vanilla cake mix
1 Container of Favorite Vanilla Icing or homemade icing

1/2 Cup Jackson Morgan Southern Cream in Orange

1/2 Cup Water

Orange sprinkles (optional)

Gather all of your ingredients per the recipe on the box. Make the cake mix according to the instructions on the box, but substitute 1/2 cup of Jackson Morgan Southern Cream in whipped orange cream and 1/2 cup water for 1 cup of water. (Base amount of JM/water on amount of water your box recipe calls for.) You can add more Jackson Morgan instead of milk if you prefer it to be boozier. Pour mix into a lined cupcake pan and bake according to instructions on the cake mix box. Once cupcakes have cooled, top with vanilla icing and orange sprinkles. Serve immediately or keep in the fridge until football fans arrive.

Tasty Tailgating Menu

Our family loves to get together, but we are not necessarily fans of spending a lot of time in the kitchen before the tailgate. Thus, we go for easy recipes that can be made ahead of time, or at the last minute, with a few healthy options alongside more indulgent treats. Read on for our game day game plan.

There are a few aspects of the stadium you may wish to replicate at your tailgate. For us, one of those is most definitely hot popcorn. Serve it salty and buttered, keep it light, or boozy with Jackson Morgan Southern Cream in salted caramel - you really cannot go wrong! Sometimes, when your mind is wound up in the game, it is just hard to decide what you want. In those moments, most of our friends and family reach for something to please both pleasures of the palate. A snack mix composed of pretzels, caramel popcorn, mini peanut butter cups, chocolate candies, and peanuts offers the indecisive snacker a grand little combination of sweet and salty.

Considering your guest list can also really help determine your menu. Those eating according to a specific diet or simply opting to snack light might also appreciate the option of a veggie tray served with a scrumptious dip or two. Queso at kickoff has always been a crowd-pleaser at our tailgate parties, especially when the cheese dip is served hot from our football crockpot.

Our whole family is known to dig into a bucket of chicken wings, but we do have our own seasoning preferences, so we like to cook up a few flavor possibilities to keep the home team happy. Turkey Roll-Ups are another tasty tradition. Even the most complicated item on the menu is super well-received and straightforward, so much, so they never seem to last until halftime! Caprese bites are heavenly little morsels of mozzarella, grape tomatoes, and basil leaves, all stacked on a kabob stick then drizzled with balsamic glaze. These might sound a little fancy for a football party, but they pair perfectly with punting the pigskin.

Don’t forget to serve up something to satisfy the sweet tooth. Our Jackson Morgan Southern Cream whipped orange cupcakes boast a winning record, they never disappoint. Stay close to the huddle and we will reveal this power play of a recipe soon!

Tailgating Party Bar Set Up

Continuing the theme with our tailgating party at the family farm, we are sharing our bar set up today. What is a tailgate without a libation station? For our rad retro-themed tailgate, we broke out our Tennessee orange rolling cooler. Filled with our favorite beverages, this cooler keeps Jackson Morgan Southern Cream in whipped orange cream, salted caramel, and brown sugar at the perfect sipping temperature! This chilled chest offers plenty of space, so feel free to toss in some bottled non-alcoholic drinks like root beer and orange cream soda as well.

Our station is decked out in vintage team decor from a throwback Tennessee pennant, puffy pom poms, foam fingers, old school orange megaphone, and a crate full of footballs. Who doesn’t dig this snazzy referee balloon? This guy might turn into a punching bag before the end of the game, but we saw him at Party Hat Paper Company and invited him to the shindig.

Feel a little friendly competition coming on? Divide into teams and break out the boards and bags! We all know cornhole is better with cocktails, so mix up Jackson Morgan Southern Cream in cute custom cups that echo your theme. We scooped up these “Go Ya’ll” and “Tailgating with Jackson Morgan” reusable plastic containers with lids and straws from our friends at Party Hat Paper Company. They take the stress out of party planning so we can focus on family and fun!

Stay tuned to see the starting line up on our Tasty Tailgating Menu.

Tailgating at the Farm

Our family loves getting together on game day. One of our favorite places to cheer on our team is this little piece of land with a great water view - Our Family Farm! Nestled in our hometown of Fayetteville, Tennessee, we love the look of our team colors reflecting off the smooth water of the pond. The farm is less crowded than a busy stadium, and far enough away that the neighbors cannot hear us contesting every questionable call. We enjoy having friends and family over to celebrate game day with cornhole, cocktails, and easy appetizers.

This time we took our tailgate game to a new level with a rad retro makeover! The vintage camper we rented from The Flying Ham in Nashville was spot on for this event. With its cozy set up, comfortable seating, and vintage vibe - you cannot go wrong renting one of these for your next event. We embraced the camper’s nostalgic feel and incorporated some old school gear in our decor as well. Sipping on something with a little extra pizzazz makes close games and overtimes a little more bearable, always keep some Jackson Morgan Southern Cream nearby.

Jackson Morgan Southern Cream in whipped orange cream is the perfect flavor for tailgating in Tennessee. Add ice and your favorite brand of Tennessee whiskey for am easy game day cocktail. Plastic tailgating cups with sayings such as “Go Y’all” and “Tailgating with Jackson Morgan” from Party Hat Paper Company made sipping cocktails even more festive. As the weather becomes colder, our family adds Jackson Morgan in salted caramel to the line up for spiked coffee or hot chocolate. Top with marshmallows for the best treat!

Set up was a snap with our Custom Party in a Box from Party Hat Paper Company. They chose party goods, signage, table cloth, cups, straws - the works, and it all came in our choice of color scheme: orange, green, and teal. The turf table runner was the perfect touch to pull it all together. Incorporating some larger than life pieces like the gold “Touchdown” balloons creates decor with a significant impact! Our family loves capturing memories at these good-time gatherings, so we also featured a boxwood wall with an orange T from The Flower Walls Nashville. Throw in some peppy pom poms, foam fingers, megaphone, and footballs as props, and you have the perfect photo backdrop. Stay tuned for more details from this fun tailgate including cocktail recipes, menu, and more.
